Estanc begins manufacturing equipment for Finland’s oldest nuclear power plant

Estanc and Fortum have signed a contract aimed at increasing the efficiency of the Loviisa nuclear power plant by replacing three high-pressure heat exchangers

The contract signed by Estanc and Fortum aims to increase the efficiency of the Loviisa nuclear power plant by replacing three high-pressure heat exchangers. The modernization of the Loviisa nuclear power plant follows the extension of its operating license granted by the Finnish government last year, allowing the plant to remain operational until the end of 2050.

Estanc is responsible for the design, manufacturing, and transportation of equipment weighing nearly 40 tons. The work is expected to be completed by the fall of 2025, with installation work to be carried out by the experienced Estonian company Scanweld, which has more than 30 years of experience in its field and has earned our complete trust.

This is our third project in the nuclear energy sector. Based on the experience gained from our first project, which began three years ago, we were already prepared for the complex, thorough, and time-consuming documentation required. The contract with Fortum is of significant importance to us, as it proves that despite the globally challenging economic situation and a quieter period in the market, we can still secure well-suited contracts through focused work. Additionally, such a responsible project demonstrates the great trust placed in us.

The Loviisa nuclear power plant, which has two pressurized reactors, is Finland’s first nuclear power plant and began full-scale operations in 1981. The operating licenses for both reactors were renewed in 1998, 2007, and 2023. Currently, the plant generates more than ten percent of Finland’s electricity consumption.
